Heartening to read about the brilliance, resolve, and forward thinking of those who were formerly in the Civil Rights Division- as elsewhere.

Thanks, Mary. There are so many former civil servants across lots of agencies who are using their voices!

This may be the greatest tragedy of the MAGA/Heritage administration. I am so glad and grateful you and your former co-workers are continuing the fight even without the scaffolding of the institution.

Thank you.

None of it was a mistake! So glad to be able to see you this weekend. I miss you (and the team, and our work) every day.

Thank you, Joy. And I miss you and all of it, too. Seeing you and listening to your eloquent presentation was good for my soul. ❤️

Having come into adulthood in the 60’s and 70’s, this piece comes like a breath blowing on the embers left from that fire. It renews my hope that the Dream is still alive!

Thank God for people like you, along with your colleagues, who are so determined to rise from the rubble, brush yourself off, and carry it forward. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

That’s so kind of you, Marcia. Im so glad the “rhymes of history” have renewed your hope. There is so much we can draw upon from those who came before us.

I love Pauli Murray too Ronda. We feature her on our Legacy Project website (where I'm the Senior Researcher and Chief Lesson Plan creator since Illinois has an LGBTQ+ inclusive curriculum mandate for grades K-12) https://legacyprojectchicago.org/person/pauli-murray

Thanks for writing this piece to honor what was the amazing DOJ Civil Rights Division.

Thank you, Carrie. And this is great information, I’m glad you shared it! I think Pauli Murray is sometimes overlooked despite their extraordinary contributions. Thanks for the work you’re doing!

You're welcome Ronda. Check out our whole site. I'm responsible for uploading all this information. Also, I would love it if you shared this with Mary and the rest of your friends.

Sometimes in life we set ourselves up for what the standard is and when we should meet our goals that we forget all is not lost rather than focusing on the journey our passion dedication and commitment to the most important part of why we’re here .

My brother used to marvel at how I was able to pick winners in boxing I always rooted for the underdog. I told him that so much this boxer had to endure to become a contender that he would win because he couldn’t go back to a life of hardship maybe even death.

All this to say that everything happens for a reason and in its own time.

The time was right for you !

You didn’t hold back .

Yes the Crown Jewel has been severely impacted. However there is a shifting of perspective . People have become more active in their communities applying pressure on a constant basis. These acts of resistance have proven effective.

The work going forward will be profound and meaningful.

This is why we need all of the talent brain trust the civil rights lawyers/advocates can provide for the people for the future.

Thank you and all your colleagues for their service.

Thank you for this very thoughtful comment, Paula.

Maybe you didn't "fit the profile", but the profile apparently fit you. Thank you for your continued dedication, Ma'am.

That’s kind, thank you.

Powerful reflection from a former DOJ Civil Rights Division attorney: grieving the gutted agency (75% staff loss), yet hopeful. Legacy lives on—work shifts back to the people. Inspiring.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Ronda. This has all been a brutal lesson, but a valuable one. Once the mess clears and the rot is properly taken out, WE REBUILD. Encouraging to know the good folks formerly at the DOJ are still doing the work quietly in the background. You’ll be the rockstars when we turn the page.

Ronda Cress's avatar

Thanks. There are so many people quietly doing the work all around the country but that fact often doesn’t break into the headlines.

You give me hope. You really know how to paint a picture with words. Congratulations also on your marriage ♥️

I am participating in a letter writing campaign “The Mailstorm”. It’s small but it’s something. Thank you for your continued dedication to our civil rights. “Noli pati a scelestis opprimil

That's wonderful, Mary! Even the seemingly small acts can have a big impact!

Your insight into the DOJ and how eroding the structure is going to affect us all is so important. When I am trying to understand what's going on I often think, "I wonder what Ronda thinks about this?" Thanks for giving us a place to find out!

Thanks so much, Amy! 🙏🏼
